Windows OS is home for lots of known issues, but the good thing is there is always a solution to troubleshoot the issue. In today’s post, I will show discuss one out of them with a working solution.
Most of the users try to fix problems related to Windows by following methods:
- Formatting system drive
- Reinstalling Windows
While in some occasion users prefer to fix the issue by cleaning all the files and folders available in the data drives like D drive, E drive, F drive etc. For that, users simply open the Windows File Explorer -> Select the drive -> Click Format option in the context menu.
But the process of clearing files and folder in data drive by formatting do not work flawlessly all the time. Many users described that they seeing an error message when trying to format the Data drive or Hard drive which read:
Windows cannot format this drive. Quit any disk utilities or other programs that are using this drive, and make sure that no window is displaying the contents of the drive. Then try formatting again.
Let us examine two situations:
Format System Drive C:
One can format the C drive using internal or external media when not logged into Windows.
Format Data Drives D: E: etc.
In this situation, one need to close all the opened application and then try to format the drive, but this method does not work all the time.
Windows cannot format this drive, Quit any disk utilities or other programs that are using this drive
In case, you’re also seeing the same error and not able to Format your Data Drives, then you must check out following ways to troubleshoot the issue.
Format C Drive
One can use Windows installation media during setup to format C drive. Simply select the drive and click on format link in the setup window. But use this method only if you’re planning to perform a clean installation of Windows operating system.
Format D, E, F Data Drives
One of the right procedure to format the data drives is by making right click on the drive, click on Format option and wait until the process is completed. But this method is not working and showing errors, you can use following methods to format data drives
Use Disk Management tool to do force format
1. Press WIN + R keyboard shortcut at the same time. In the space provided type disk diskmgmt.msc and hit Enter. This will launch Disk Management tool.
2. Here you will get a complete list of drives. You just need to make right click on the data drive which you want to format and click on the Format option. Now doing this will not format the drive normally and you might see following error message:
The volume (name of the drive) logical drive currently in use. To force the format of this volume click Yes.
Actually, it will format the selected data drive forcefully and one can verify this thing by checking the free space available on the drive.
Use Diskpart to Format Data Drive
Alternatively, If the above-discussed method didn’t help you in formatting the data drive, then check out the Diskpart command-line tool which comes preinstalled in Windows 10, Windows 8 and Windows 7 operating system.
To run this tool you need to run Command Prompt. For that search CMD or Command Prompt using the search bar. Once Command Prompt is opened you need need to type following commands one by one:
diskpart list disk list volume select volume <no> format
In above commands, you need to replace <no> with a number of the data drive volume that you want to format. This will format the drive.
I hope you find these ways useful.
