Want to set animated desktop background or live wallpapers in Windows 10? Officially, it is not possible. In case, you don’t have any problem in using third party utilities for customizing your Windows 10 PC or laptop, then this article is dedicated to you.
Windows 10 is one of the best version of Windows OS developed by Microsoft. It offers a variety of settings and options in the OS so that users can customize the OS according to their requirements. I have already covered lots of different tutorials explaining how different customization can be done.
Still, there is one thing which is still missing in the Windows 10 and users are desperate to get that functionality officially i.e. ability to set live wallpapers or animated desktop background in Windows 10.
Even I’m also the one out of the desperate users who want this functionality, but the truth is that this functionality is not available, at least when I’m writing this article.
To get this functionality, I start exploring different third-party customization tools available on the web and my search ends up with tool name as DreamScene.
Stardock DeskScapes 8 for Windows 10
DeskScapes might be new to some users, but I’m aware of this software from the time of Microsoft’s Windows Vista because, at that time, this is the only customization tool that made it possible for the users to set animated desktop backgrounds or live wallpapers.
It is the best desktop customization software that let you animate and customize the wallpaper on your Windows desktop in the Windows 10.
Simply select the one of the animated or live wallpaper already included with DeskScapes, or use your own images WMC files to customize your desktop.
Today I will show you how you can take advantage of DeskScapes 8 from Stardock to personalize your Windows 10 desktop.
Things to Keep in mind (Cons)
Before you start using DeskScapes, it is very important to understand that there are lots of Cons which you need to face while setting a live wallpaper or animated desktop background.
Using live wallpapers or animated desktop background is not a good idea if you’re running Windows 10 PC and Laptop with low-end specification as it may reduce the overall performance of the system.
If you really care about the battery life of the Windows 10 devices that runs on battery, then it is not a good idea to use animated desktop background, as it may quickly drain the battery of your device.
There is no doubt that, if you really want your Windows desktop to look fancy, then you have to tax pay the battery life of the system.
Of course, if you’re using device with high-end specification or running the system on power supply instead of battery, then there is nothing wrong in following this workaround
Now it is upto you whether you want to set live wallpaper in Windows 10. Here is what you need to do that:
Set Animated Desktop Background or Windows 10 Live Wallpaper
1. Download the DeskScape 8 Installer from the official website.
2. Run the setup. When UAC dialog box appears, click Yes to continue.
3. In the next window Accept the terms and conditions, click on the Next button.
4. “Yes, also install Fences 3” uncheck this box in the installer window and click on Next button.
Keep following the instructions to finish the DeskScape installation.
5. In the new windows, a pop-up will appear in the middle of the screen showing your three different options Enter Product key, Purchase Product key, and Continue 30 Day Trial.
Click on the desired option to continue using it.
If you want to give a try to DeskScape 8, then Continue using it as 30 Day Trial. In case, you have a product key or purchase product key, then click on those options.
6. Once done, you will see the two-column window. On the left side, you will find out wallpapers, videos, accompanied with dynamic dreams and hybrid dreams.
Here dreams represent “animated wallpaper in .Dream format.”
To filter dynamic dreams, hybrid dreams, videos, and wallpaper you can click on the down arrow visible on the top left side of the screen for getting more customization options.
7. Simply click on the animated wallpaper or video which you want to set as desktop background in Windows 10 and click on the Apply to my desktop option visible on the bottom right side of the screen.
In no seconds, you animated desktop background will be set as live wallpaper in Windows 10.
Add more animated backgrounds into DeskScapes window
DeskScapes window only has limited numbers of wallpapers, videos, and hybrid & dynamic dreams. But that doesn’t mean you can’t add more to it.

To add them into DeskScapes window, you just need to click on the “Download more backgrounds from WinCustomize” link which is also available on the left side of the window.

Simply select the animated background (dream) and download it on your computer and run the downloaded .dream file and in no second it will set as your desktop background.
- You can pause live wallpaper or desktop background anytime. For that, make a right click on the desktop and select Pause DeskScapes.
- If the desktop background is not working or just showing a black background, then log out and log in again and relaunch the DeskScapes.
- When AC power is disconnected, the DeskScapes 8 will automatically pause.
What I’m using for my Windows 10 laptop?
