Microsoft Cortana is an intelligent personal digital assistant application that comes by default in Windows 10. Using Cortana, you can look up for information using your voice commands. You can also use Windows 10 Cortana as Calculator and much more. it is really a useful feature especially for Windows 10 Mobiles and it makes sense to use
Undoubtedly it is a useful feature for Windows 10 Mobiles, but if we talk about Windows 10 PC I didn’t find any strong reason to use it especially when you have a full keyboard to perform operations and microphone is far away from the mouth.
In case, you’re one out of the users who have no plans to use Cortana, then here in this article you will read step by step guide on how to disable Cortana in Windows 10 Creators Update version 1703
Disable Microsoft Cortana in Windows 10 Creators Update
In the previous version of Windows 10 version “1511” or “Threshold 2” users simply click on the gear icon in the Cortana app and quickly disable it from there. But there is no option to do the same in the Creators Update of Windows 10 version 1703. So here is what you need to do:
1. Launch the RUN dialog box. For that Press WIN + R keyboard keys.
2. In the space provided type “regedit” and click OK to open Registry Editor.
When UAC dialog box appears, click Yes to continue.
3. In Registry Editor navigate to the following registry:
Note: In case, you do not find such registry, then simply create one yourself. For that, make right click on the Windows subkey and from context menu choose New -> Key
And name it “Windows Search“.
4. Select Windows Search and make right click on the right pane. From the context menu choose New -> DWORD (32-bit) and name it AllowCortana and leave its value data as 0.
Note: If you’re running Windows 10 64-bit, still you need to create a 32-bit DWORD value.
5. Now Restart your Windows 10 PC and you’re done.
The above steps will disable Cortana app in Windows 10 Creators Update. While SearchUI process will be in the process list, but Cortana app won’t be functional and consuming your system resources.
In case, you’re not satisfied with above workaround and want to remove Cortana completely, then you can check my previous articles on How to Uninstall Windows 10 Cortana app completely.
