If you’re running Windows 10 OS on your computer or laptop for a while, then you might have noticed that the tradition ways of booting into Safe Mode are not working anymore.
Previously users can boot into Safe Mode just by pressing “Shift + F8” keys combo or “F8” keys available on computer or laptop keyboard while booting. But now these key combination not working, but that doesn’t mean the new Windows 10 OS lack Safe Mode. It is still available and this time you need to follow different steps to enter into safe mode in Windows 10.
In this article, you will find out all the possible and convenient ways to start Windows 10 in Safe Mode. But first, it is very important to know what actually is a safe mode in Windows 10.
Windows 10 Safe Mode
Windows 10 Safe Mode is a diagnostic mode of the Windows Operating system that loads the OS with required system files and device drivers. In the Safe Mode, the add-ons, startup programs, and settings don’t run.
In most of the case, we boot into Windows 10 Safe Mode to troubleshoot system issues.
Using System Configuration tool (msconfig.exe)
1. In the Start menu search bar type “System Configuration” when the application appears in the search results. Click to open it.
Alternatively, Press WIN + R key and in the space provided type “msconfig” and hit enter. It will quickly open the System Configuration application
2. In System Configuration window switch to Boot tab.
3. Under boot options, tick the box next to Safe boot. After that, make sure only the minimal option is selected. Click on Apply button and then OK button.
4. Now a dialog box will appear with two options “Restart” and “Exit without restart“. You need to click on the Restart button and system will boot into Safe Mode.
Note: Once you have completed your work in safe mode and now you want to exit it. You need to follow same steps discussed above and uncheck the “Safe boot option” under Boot tab in the System Configuration windows. If you do not do so, every time you reboot your computer it will boot into Safe Mode.
Using Advanced Startup Options
One of the easiest ways to enter into Windows 10 Safe mode is using Advanced Startup Options. For that:
You need to make right-click on the Start button -> Shut down or Sign out. Now press the Shift key and click on Restart button.
This will restart your system into Advanced Startup Options.
Alternatively, you can start Windows 10 is Safe Mode right from the Settings apps. For that:
Press WIN + I to open Settings app and click on Update & Security -> Recovery. Now in the Advanced startup, you need to click on Restart now.
Following above two methods, your Windows 10 PC or laptop will restart and you’ll see the screen just like visible in the following screenshot
Here you need to click on Troubleshoot
On the Troubleshoot screen, you need to click on Advanced options.
On the Advanced options screen, you need to click on Startup Settings.
Now the system will restart in order to change advanced boot options accompanied with enabling Safe Mode. Simply press on the Restart.
After a successful reboot, you can select which boot option you want to enable. To boot into Windows 10 Safe Mode, you need “Press No 4 Key“. Alternatively, you can press no 5 and 6 key if you want to enable safe mode with networking or command prompt.
Once done, a black screen will come with a Safe Mode watermark available in the bottom right and left sides.
